ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਸਹਸਾ ਨਹ ਚੂਕੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਇਹੁ ਭੇਦੁ ਬਤਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਕਹਾ ਭਇਓ ਤੀਰਥ ਬ੍ਰਤ ਕੀਏ ਰਾਮ ਸਰਨਿ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ॥
ਜੋਗ ਜਗ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਨਉ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਸੁ ਬਿਸਰਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

Without God's Name thou shalt suffer pain.
Without meditation, doubt is dispelled not. The Guru reveals this secret. Pause.
Of what avail are the pilgrimages and fasting, if man enters not the Lord's sanctuary?
Be assured that fruitless are his Yogic practices and sacrificial feasts, who forgets the Lord's praise.
He who playing aside both his self conceit and worldly love sings the praise of the Lord,
Says Nanak, the mortal of such a type is said to have obtained emancipation whilst alive.
Bilaaval, Ninth Mehl:
Without the Name of the Lord, you shall only find pain.
Without devotional worship, doubt is not dispelled; the Guru has revealed this secret. ||1||Pause||
Of what use are sacred shrines of pilgrimage, if one does not enter the Sanctuary of the Lord?
Know that Yoga and sacrificial feasts are fruitless, if one forgets the Praises of God. ||1||
One who lays aside both pride and attachment, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
Says Nanak, the mortal who does this is said to be 'jivan mukta' liberated while yet alive. ||2||2||

ਭਗਤੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ) ਸੰਸਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਗੁਰੂ ਇਸ, ਗੁਹਝ ਭਾਵ ਨੂੰ (ਖੋਲ੍ਹ ਕੇ) ਦਸਦਾ ਹੈ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਜੇ) ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦੀ ਸ਼ਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਤੀਰਥ (ਇਸ਼ਨਾਨ ਕੀਤਿਆਂ ਤੇ) ਵਰਤ (ਰਖਿਆਂ) ਕੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈਂ?
ਜਿਹੜਾ (ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਜਸ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਜੋਗ (ਸਾਧਨ), ਯੱਗ ਆਦਿਕ (ਸਾਰੇ ਕਰਮ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹੀ ਮੰਨੋ।੧।
(ਹੇ ਭਾਈ ! ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ) ਮਾਣ ਅਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤਿਆਗ ਕੇ ਪਰਮੇਸ਼ਰ ਦੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਵਿਧੀ ਨਾਲ (ਭਜਨ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ) ਕੋਈ (ਵਿਰਲਾ) ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮੁਕਤਿ ਕਹਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ (ਬਾਕੀ ਸਭ ਆਵਾਗਵਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ)।੨।੨।
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ (ਸਿਮਰਨ) ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੁੱਖ ਸਹਾਰਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੂ (ਜੀਵਨ-ਮਾਰਗ ਦੀ) ਇਹ ਡੂੰਘੀ ਗੱਲ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਭਗਤੀ ਕਰਨ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਸਹਿਮ ਖ਼ਤਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਤੀਰਥ-ਜਾਤ੍ਰਾ ਕਰਨ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਲਾਭ ਨਹੀਂ, ਵਰਤ ਰੱਖਣ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਾਇਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ।
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਭੁਲਾ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਮੈਂ ਸਮਝਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਜੋਗ-ਸਾਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਜੱਗ (ਆਦਿਕ ਕਰਮ ਸਭ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਹਨ ॥੧॥
ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾ ਮੋਹ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੀ ਸਿਫ਼ਤਿ-ਸਾਲਾਹ ਦੇ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਂਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ,
ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ- ਜੇਹੜਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤੀਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਜੀਵਨ-ਮੁਕਤਿ ਅਖਵਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ (ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਉਸ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਣੀ ਵਿਚੋਂ ਗਿਣਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ, ਜੇਹੜੇ ਇਸ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਕਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਪਕੜ ਤੋਂ ਬਚੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ) ॥੨॥੨॥
ਬਿਲਾਵਲ ਨੌਵੀਂ ਪਾਤਿਸ਼ਾਹੀ।
ਵਾਹਿਗੁਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਦੇ ਬਾਝੋਂ ਤੂੰ ਤਕਲੀਫ ਉਠਾਵੇਂਗਾ।
ਸਿਰਮਨ ਦੇ ਬਗੈਰ ਸੰਦੇਹ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ। ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਇਹ ਭੇਤ ਦਰਸਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ। ਠਹਿਰਾਉ।
ਕੀ ਲਾਭ ਹੈ ਧਰਮ ਅਸਥਾਨਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਯਾਤ੍ਰਾਵਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਫਰਤਾਂ ਦਾ, ਜੇਕਰ ਇਨਸਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੀ ਪਨਾਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਲੈਂਦਾ।
ਮੰਨ ਲੈ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਦੇ ਸਾਧਨ ਅਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਵਰਤ ਨਿਸਫਲ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਸਾਈਂ ਦੀ ਕੀਰਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਲਾ ਦਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
ਜੋ ਆਪਣੀ ਸਵੈ-ਹੰਗਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸੰਸਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਦੋਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ, ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਗਾਇਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।
ਗੁਰੂ ਜੀ ਆਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਇਸ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ ਜੀਵ, ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਜੀ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਨੂੰ ਪਰਾਪਤ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਆਖਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।
